Our legislative year doesn’t officially start until January, however, now is the best time to make contact with your legislators. August, September, and October are the best months to plan a meeting with legislators due to their availability. These months are also when issues and concerns are being researched and studied. Based on the findings of several summer interim committees, bills will be written and eventually introduced in the State House. Reaching out to legislators now is extremely important and the best way to contact them is via e-mail and phone. An important reminder, your legislators may have changed due to redistricting this past year. You can verify or check who your legislators are via Indiana PTA’s website at indianapta.org.

This is a short session and non-budget year. It looks to be an exciting year with a variety of issues to emerge. One issue or concern that Indiana PTA is focusing on this year is family engagement. Studies have clearly shown that the number one factor contributing to a successful education is an engaged parent. Many times when our policy makers are reviewing the issues they forget to include parents. We, Indiana PTA, hope to encourage and generate legislation that will support family engagement. Please remember to read our weekly Good News and e-mail updates to stay informed on all of the important topics or issues this year. If you are currently not receiving our Good News and/or e-mail updates, and would like to, contact us at office@indianapta.org.
