Legislative update - take action on Senate Bill 65: Instruction of human sexuality Bill.

This bill would require all school corporations to obtain consent forms from parents prior to any instruction on human sexuality as well as give parents access to all of the materials and resources.

Based on current curriculum, students may be exposed to some minor content in 5th grade when learning about health and hygiene however it’s not until 9th grade that most students cover this material.

Current law already gives parents access to curriculum and materials and it’s our fear that a large population of our students would be excluded from the classes due to lack of parent participation and or engagement not because of opposition to the content. Indiana PTA supports comprehensive sex education and believes that parents should opt out and not op in for current curriculum.

The bill passed out of the Senate (vote was 37 to 12) and will move over to the House during the second half of our legislative session. We need to encourage our parents to reach out and ask their legislators to oppose the bill.

PTA Advocacy

One of the most important roles of Indiana PTA is to advocate for laws that improve the lives of all children. The information below will help you learn more about legislative issues and how to be a better advocate.

What is a Legislative Position?

A legislative position is a statement outlining the opinion, will or intent of the association to address statewide problems, situations or concerns that affect children and youth.  A position statement usually requires initial action to seek resolution on the issue, but the position is sometimes maintained, even when action has been taken, to substantiate the continuing will of the association.

The Indiana General Assembly will be in session until March 14, 2018.

The passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 represented a shift from a prescriptive federal role in education under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) to more state and local flexibility. States now have more responsibility over their accountability systems, assessments, standards and school improvement plans than they had in the past 15 years. So what does this new law mean for your child’s education and school?
